I'm very excited that our first turnout was a strong one, with seven players showing up with their Commander decks.
The following Commanders made appearances last night:
Jenara, Asura of War
Uriel, the Miststalker
Rafiq of the Many
Sharuum, the Hedgmon
Darien, King of Kjeldor
Mayael, the Anima
Ulasht, the Hate Seed
We set up two tables, one with three players and one with four.
Table 1 saw Jenara, Uriel and Sharuum battling. Basically, Bant vs. Naya vs. Esper in an Alara showdown. Chris Gannon's bant deck won big, earning 8 victory points over two games. At one point, the words "Jenara is now a 22/22" were uttered at the table.
Jenara proved to be too much to handle, and I personally rank her as one of the most underrated generals out there. Chris has effectively built a deck around making her better. And she only costs 3 to cast! Ridiculous.
At table 2, we saw Rafiq, Mayael, Darien, and Ulasht. Mayael gained early momentum, but some well-timed wrath effects by the bant and mono-white players kept things in balance. Manny's downfall came when he made the following play...
"I play Iona, naming white".
This shut down the Rafiq and Darien decks completely. Luckily, I had a Celestial Colonnade and eventually took Manny out of the game slowly. Manny still one a victory point for 'most creative play' by effectively summoning Garruk for free.
Stephen's Darien deck seemed poised to win. He made his general huge with Strata Scythe and Argentum Armor and bashed into Rafiq's lines. He tried to destroy Akroma, but forgot that Dauntless Escort was on the battlefield. In response to Argentum Armor, the escort was sacked making Akroma indestructable.
Stephen had Wrath of God in hand, but it was useless. The next turn Akroma hit him for lethal damage and he was out. It was down to Rafiq and Ulasht.
Flying creatures were the eventual downfall for Ulasht, as Iona and a Colonnade attacked together. Only one could be blocked and the Colonnade delivered the final blow ending the game after over 2 hours of intense play.
All games were hard fought and fun. We hope this trend continues and we encourage more players to join in on the good times. The timing is perfect with new Commander products slated to hit the shelves in June.
