Hold the presses...I'm working on a control deck to play!
I wanted to play a control for a few reasons. First, I want to play Planeswalkers because they are just fun to play, and with Jace banned I have access to a number of cards that are good again in standard. Second, I think control is poised to be really good in the meta-game. It reminds me of pre-CawBlade when ramp, aggro and control all had equal balance. Lastly, I want to try something different. Some of you may remember the first deck I had success with was a Bant deck that used Mass Polymorph. It was control-based.
Here's the decklist:
[Creatures] 9
4 Squadron Hawk
2 Sphinx of Jwar Isle
2 Inferno Titan
1 Consecrated Sphinx
[Spells]
4 Lighting Bolt
4 Preordain
3 Tumble Magnet
3 Mana Leak
2 Day of Judgment
2 Pyroclasm
1 Deprive
[Planeswalker] 6
3 Jace Beleren
2 Elspeth Tirel
1 Venser, the Sojourner
[Land] 26
3 Celestial Colonnade
3 Seachrome Coast
3 Scalding Tarn
2 Terramorphic Expanse
2 Tectonic Edge
1 Mystifying Maze
5 Island
5 Mountain
2 Plains
The deck is pretty straight forward. Control the board until you drop a threat...could be planeswalker or a fatty. I really like Sphinx of Jwar Isle a lot in this deck. With all the good spot removal available, shroud is a powerful mechanic and he has tested well so far.
Lighting Bolt makes up my spot removal package, and a small counter package of 3 Mana Leak and 1 Deprive. I personally do NOT like playing 4 Mana Leak. I think they are weak late game, especially against other control decks. I like the hard counter Deprive for the cost.
Finally, I can board sweep with 2 DoJ and 2 Pyroclasm. I like the versatility this gives me against really fast aggro decks like RDW or Elves.
Sideboard is very reminiscent of pre-Caw...
4 Flashfreeze (Valakut is a deck again...also good against Splinter Twin)
4 Spreading Seas (See above...and also wrecks Vampires)
3 Divine Offering (Artifact-based strategies will still exist)
2 Pyroclasm (Can't have too much pyroclasm)
1 DoJ (See above)
1 Tumble Magnet
