So, I've been mulling around U/R (Izzet) Control for awhile trying to find a combination of cards that works. My experience is the deck dies to heavy aggro pretty easily.
Until I played Josh's version, which I really like. I think (I hope) we are going to work on a version together.
Here's my initial decklist...I don't know Josh's, but hopefully he will reply.
[Creatures] 8 4 Grim Lavamancer 2 Frost Titan 2 Inferno Titan
[Spells] 4 Gitaxian Probe 4 Preordain 4 Lightning Bolt 3 Mana Leak 2 Spell Pierce
[Planeswalkers] 8 3 Jace Beleren 3 Koth of the Hammer 2 Chandra, the Firebrand
[Lands] 26 4 Scalding Tarn 2 Tectonic Edge 1 Mystifying Maze 10 Island 9 Mountain
Sideboard: 4 Flashfreeze 4 Speading Seas 3 Combust 3 Pyroclasm 1 Into the Roil

I think you should maybe add some proliferate effects such as terrerzts gambits and volt charge

I like where your head is at, Deo, especially when partnered with the new Chandra (who is pretty awesome). Tezzeret's Gambit copied to recover her lost loyalty counters seems really good.
My only problem with proliferate is the cost of the cards. I want to try this light version first, but may splash in some proliferate effects.

Updated decklist after some playtesting...
[Creatures] 9 4 Grim Lavamancer 2 Frost Titan 2 Inferno Titan 1 Consecrated Sphinx
[Spells] 20 4 Gitaxian Probe 4 Preordain 4 Lightning Bolt 4 Mana Leak 2 Into the Roil 2 Jace's Ingenuity
[Planeswalkers] 5 3 Koth of the Hammer 2 Chandra, the Firebrand
[Lands] 26 4 Scalding Tarn 3 Tectonic Edge 1 Mystifying Maze 9 Island 9 Mountain
Sideboard: 4 Flashfreeze 4 Speading Seas 4 Combust 3 Pyroclasm
What changed? I personally don't like Spell Pierce, so I cut it out in favor of another Mana-Leak and Into the Roil. I also cut Jace Beleren in favor of 2 copies of Jace's Ingenuity. This frees up my mana, turn 3 to counter my opponent or burn them out with Lavamancers and Lightning Bolts.
Chandra is NOT a win-con in this deck, but provides some really great utility. Koth is a win-con in every deck. I think 3 is the right number of copies for him.
I like simple, clean sideboards. 4 Flashfreeze for Valakut and RDW. 4 Speading Seas for Vampires and Valakut. 4 Combust for Splinter Twin. 3 Pyroclasm for Aggro decks.

Sorry, I play Slagstorm over Pyroclasm in the sideboard.

well im replying like you had hoped lol i hope someone else had finnaly seen the power of grim lavamancer in a control deck... he controls the tempo he turns every mana leak and scalding tarn and preordain into a shock and can really control the board on his own... after that being said i also think the koth count should come up to four. he is a card that when he hits the feild immediatly affects the game and in a big way. and i dont know if you noticed in my build but everything hitting the feild effects the game immediatly wich is why i think red is a very strong color right now. i think your draw spell count can come down a little bit i personnaly run 3 probe 3 preordain 3 leak 2 peirce and a cancel oh and the four bolts of course.... i lvoe the idea of the consecrated sphinx i was dabling around with that idea i think he is a great card that also live to dismember... soemthing i have been playing around with in my build are solemn simulacrums. when they hit the feild you grab a land into play tapped and when they die you draw a card... this allows for a turn 5 titan or a 2/2 unblockable in a sense... they have never bothered me when i played them but im not sure if they are good for this deck let me know what you think about it... i also agree with switching out the jace belerens for the ingenuity ive noticed that i usually dont wanna play jace till around turn five so i can keep up my counter magic and i never get the full 3 draws out of him. as for proliferating i think it is a good idea to find room for atleast the tezz gambits or the volt charge but only one of the two... it is an under rated ability because people are not expecting "planswaler ramp" wich means a second turn koth uiltimate wins almost every time.... chandra is a very techy card but i can find a solid reason as to why you would need her in the deck.... extra bolts? draw? i mean dont get me wrong its good but im not sure if she is strong enough... let me know in your testing how that goes. oh and into the roil is really good...( shrine of burning rage)

Updated deck list splashing black turing this into Grixis Control:
[Creatures] 7 1 Consecrated Sphinx 1 Inferno Titan 1 Moltensteel Dragon 1 Steel Hellkite 1 Wurmcoil Engine 2 Treasure Mage
[Spells] 23 4 Preordain 4 Lightning Bolt 3 Duress 2 Despise 4 Mana Leak 2 Doom Blade 2 Into the Roil 2 Jace's Ingenuity
[Planeswalker] 4 4 Koth of the Hammer
[Lands] 26 4 Darkslick Shores 2 Drowned Catacomb (would prefer Creeping Tar Pit, anyone have for trade?) 2 Tectonic Edge 4 Scalding Tarn 7 Mountain 7 Island
Sideboard: 4 Flashfreeze 3 Combust 3 Speading Seas 2 Go for the throat 1 Duress 1 Mindslaver 1 Contagion Engine
I played against Splinter Twin combo and the initial impression is the deck matches up well against that archetype. I think it would also give other control decks a hard time. I need to play test against really good aggro...I think that RDW and B/R Vampires will give this deck a hard time.
