Brewing for Innistrad is taking me back to my origins in magic, almost 20 years ago. I think the new set has finally provided players the gas to play one of the oldest, and most beloved archetypes...White Weenie.
It all starts with one card:
Champion of the Parish [W, 1/1 Human Soldier, 'Whenever another human enters the battlefield put a +1/+1 counter on Champion of the Parish"]
Here's another exciting development:
Mikaeus the Lunarch [WX, 1/1 Legendary Creature Human Cleric, enters the battlefield with x +1/+1 counters on him, tap; add a +1/+1 counter, tap; remove a +1/+1 counter and put a +1/+1 counter on each other creature you control]
What the what? I know legendary creatures don't see a lot of play, but this guy is like having an Ajani Goldmane you can play turn 2! Sign me up.
White Weenie is not White Weenie without Honor of the Pure. It defines the archetype...play small dudes and make them larger. I will play four copies.
When I build a deck like this I often think about curve first, then fill in the blanks with the best possible cards. I think I can play about 21 lands and curve out at 5, so here's my goal:
14 1-drop
10 2-drop
8 3-drop
4 4-drop
3 5-drop
Gideon's Lawkeeper is removal, in a deck that won't allow me to play Dispatch to its full value. I should play 4 copies. Here are my 1-drops
4 Champion of the Parish
4 Gideon's Lawkeeper
3 Elite Vanguard
3 Mikaeus the Lunarch
For 2-drops, we know we want to play 4 Honor of the Pure, but what creatures?
4 Honor of the Pure
4 Elite Inquisitor
2 Suture Priest
I opted for the new Elite Inquisitor. He is reminiscent of Kazandu Blademaster with first-strike and vigilance. Both relevant powers. I really like Suture Priest, but this spot may yield to Porcelain Legionnaire after testing.
3-drops...white has a LOT of appealing 3-drops right now with Mirran Crusader, Gideon's Avenger, and the new cards, Fiend Hunter and Mentor of the Meek. I can't play all of them, so I will play the ones that fit the theme of this deck best. I also want to play a few copies of Oblivion Ring for utility removal.
3 Gideon's Avenger
3 Fiend Hunter
2 Oblivion Ring
4-drops are easy. One card...Hero of Bladehold. If she hits the game should be over turn 5.
4 Hero of Bladehold
Finally, for late-game I want to play a small planeswalker suite to lock the game down.
2 Gideon Jura
1 Elspeth Tirel
21 Plains rounds out the list.
Here it is completed:
4 Champion of the Parish
4 Gideon's Lawkeeper
3 Elite Vanguard
3 Mikaeus the Lunarch
4 Honor of the Pure
4 Elite Inquisitor
2 Suture Priest
3 Gideon's Lawkeeper
3 Fiend Hunter
2 Oblivion Ring
2 Gideon Jura
1 Elspeth Tirel
21 Plains
Let me know what you think!
