True, D&D 4e is much different than past editions, but I think that it is a big improvement and in general I prefer the new system.
The store currently doesn't have much for D&D, but I understand they will be carrying it soon.

That's my understanding as well.
Played some 3rd Edition and played 2nd Edition extensively back in the day.
What are some the changes (without trolling for rules)? Is it still d20 based, like 3rd Ed?

There are many things you roll a D20 for. It is IMHO the biggest change to the system that they have put out. However, once you get used to the new system, it's pretty cool.

I'm a die-hard 3.5 junkie. (Read: Loser who clings to past version like Counter Strike 1.5) and tried 4.0 and was not very satisfied.
While 4.0 is much more encounter oriented, I dislike the new skills system in which you no-longer roll for checks. You either can, or cannot do it. There are no-longer maybes. So this takes away from the, Can I bluff the guard to let me sneak in, or maybe I can try to find information at the inn.
You now have At-Will, Encounter, and Daily Abilities. Witch you can activate either. Whenever you want, once per encounter or once a day, respectively. That and combat now has a "Second Wind" In which players can use to prevent them from dieing. Which make combat much better and more fluid.
If you wanted a combat oriented Story/Campaign then 4.0 is Awesome.
But for those who like to do the Role Playing and more story based Campaigns, we like 3.5

I tend to agree, which is why I prefer Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader:)

I agree with these comments. I've played D&D from 2nd Ed, Modified 2nd Ed, 3rd Ed, and 3.5. My favorites are definitely Modified 2nd Ed and 3.5.
I read through some of the 4th Ed books and got the impression that they made the game combat-oriented with a much lower focus on role-play. I wasn't a big fan of what I read. I prefer the RP/story aspect with story-supporting combat.

I agree. 4E is D&D in name only. To me, it comes across more as a 'beer & pretzels' game as opposed to something you can sink your role playing teeth in. The few times I sat down in a session of it, I found that I had zero emotional attachment to any character I created which I found to be a common theme with others who tried it as well.
Besides, I have too much invested in my 3.0 and 3.5 library. Thank God Pathfinder is backwards compatible. :-)
