Greetings fellow RPG enthusiasts.
Starting in January of 2011, I would like to start up an RPG group to run on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 6p to close. As I am given to understand that there are a number of experienced gamers as well as novices, I propose to start with something (relatively) simple: Dark Heresy.
Join the ranks of the few, the proud, the incredibly expendable minions of the Inquisition. All you need is a pencil, some percentile dice, and the desire to destroy the enemies of Humanity. Come forth and purge the Lupus Cluster of heretics, Xenos, and the foul and maleficent taint of the Warp.
I will allow players to determine the type of campaign (Malleus, Xenos, or Hereticus) as well as the scope of the adventure (limited, broad, or completely unfettered) and the time period (Lupus Crusade era M38, Post-Crusade M40, or Late Imperial Era M41).
Now the most important FAQ:
Q: What kind of game will this be?
A: I tend to run very role-play heavy games, with some combat. Expect an average of 1 combat per session, but figure that you are going to be spending a lot of time interacting with NPCs, figuring out the best ways to complete difficult tasks, and trying not to get caught executing 'clever plans'.
Q: Will you be allowing supplements?
A: The answer is 'Sort Of'. I will only be allowing the Core Book and the Inquisitor's Handbook for players to use. I will have access to all of the supplements and extra material and will generally use it provide rewards for the party. All players should keep this in mind when being clever.
Q: Why are you not running the game in the Calixis Sector?
A: There are a multitude of reasons for this, but the most important one is that I have been running adventures in the Lupus Cluster for several years now, and I know it much better than I know the environs of the Calixis Sector. The next most important reason is that it puts all of the players on an equal footing (since most of you have never even heard of the Lupus Cluster before you have no real inside knowledge). Finally, it allows me the freedom to shape the universe a bit more to my sensibilities to create a unique campaign for you.
Q: How long will this game last?
A: Until you reach the end or get sick of it and quit. Seriously. I have run campaigns that have lasted for years, campaigns that have lasted for months, and campaigns that have lasted for just a few sessions. I take my players' wants, needs, and preferences very seriously, and a campaign can only last so long as there is interest to sustain it. You provide the interest, I will provide the game.
Q: Do I need to have a miniature?
A: No. I like miniatures, I use miniatures, I provide miniatures and terrain for really crazy encounters. If you have a mini that you love and absolutely want to use, then by all means bring it to the game. If you don't, no worries, Todd provides. Most encounters will not need them, though.
Q: I have read all the Black Library Books, how much will you be using from those?
A: I will use the stuff I like, ignore the stuff I don't like, and reserve the right to rip off the stuff I love. While I adore the 40K universe, some stuff is just silly (I'm looking at you Ferrus Manus) and other stuff is just poorly written (I'm looking at you Graham McNiel). Figure if it is in the codices and GW/FW literature it is canonical, anything else is going to depend on my story. I do like bringing stuff from the earlier epochs into the campaign, especially stuff from the Horus Heresy era and the Imperial Crusade, but that is not always appropriate. Figure if you saw it in Lexicanum, then it is likely fair game.
Q: Aren't you the crazy SFSNNJ guy who runs that Rogue Trader group?
Yes, I am. If you've heard me running Rogue Trader, you know that I tend to make things exciting, challenging, and often difficult to pull off for my players. If you are looking to wander around beheading heretics for no other reason than that combat is fun, you will not last long at my table (your rosette will only get you out of jail so many times, and parties tend to eliminate members that disrupt their ability to achieve mission goals). While I am a firm believer that many problems can be solved with the judicious application of violence, I also tend to force players to figure out how to apply that violence judiciously.
Q: OK, I'm interested, how do I join?
Easy, post in reply to this. If you have a preference to run a specific class, you should probably post that as well. Character creation will be 1/13/2011 so long as I have at least 4 players interested in joining the campaign. That being said, If I have more than 4, so much the better. I will cap the party at 8 players (mainly because 8 is the largest table I can run without things getting bogged down due to the large stretches of RP).
